Wonders of the Open Road: Antarctica

Andvord Bay, AQ: November 2009

On November 25th, 2009, Stan Havlick dipped his front and back wheels into Neko Harbor off Andvord Bay on the Peninsula of the Antarctic Continent. This small harbor indents the eastern shore of Andvord Bay and lies seven miles southeast of Ronge Island and the southern end of the Errera Channel. Gerlache's Belgian Antarctic expedition of 1897 - 1899 first saw and roughly charted this bay and harbor. The harbor is named for the floating whale factory ship, Neko, which operated in the South Shetlands and Antarctica. This demanding and exhausting yet historic biking expedition under extreme climatic conditions took nearly two minutes over the vast distance of approximately seven feet.

Join Stan as he shares his tales and photos of this extraordinary 10-day voyage and expedition to Antarctica, and his invigorating trek into the famous Cerro Torre and Mount Fitzroy region of Patagonia, Argentina. Stan, who has lived or traveled on all seven continents, will also devote a portion of his program to answering your questions about the wonderful world of travel.
